The main antagonists are barely seen throughout the game.Tomb Raider: Underworld represents a new advancement in exploration-based gameplay. There were no boss battles like you had in Legend and Anniversary as well as in many other TR games. Underworld was just angry depressed Lara all the way through and it was kinda exhausting. In Legend we saw a good character arc with her being sassy and quippy throughout, and then laying down the law with Amanda right at the final cutscene. Lara was angry and cold and aggressive throughout most of it. The whole game was quite miserable in tone.

The combat seemed easier and less fun than Legend and Anniversary. Underworld looks cartoony in the way Lara moves and especially the way she jumps and climbs. It redid all the animations and it would've looked so much nicer to reuse the animations from Legend/Anniversary, they were heaps better. It was really short even in comparison to Legend which was already pretty short. The Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 2 versions each have separate guides. The Windows, Macintosh, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360/Xbox One versions are virtually identical and are covered in one walkthrough.

Finding multiple grades of relics and doing time trials to unlock some cool new outfits. It severely lacked replayability in the way that Legend did not. It's such a huge part of all other tomb raider games but only featured in one bit of water, at the beginning and end of Thailand. There's only one section that has breath-management underwater swimming. It got me into 3D modelling and design which really has altered the trajectory of my whole life and I'll always look back fondly on it.

It always has a special place in my heart because of XNALara which was a free 3D posing program with the characters from Underworld. That also brought some extra development issues that were made worse by the very short dev time.Īt the end of the day, despite being an enjoyable game, it also has some glaring flaws and issues that were not present in the previous two games, making it more divisive than the other two of the same trilogy. Like Shadow, it had to finish a three-part story while also developing its own themes and mythologies, without really having enough gameplay time to fully explore all of its plot points, ending with a somewhat underwhelming conclusion.Īdding to all that, it was also CD's first game that was exclusively developed with next-gen consoles in mind, contrary to Legend and Anniversary which were just upgraded ports. Like AoD, it was rushed to the market, resulting in a less polished game with lots of cut content (though to be fair, not as severe as AoD). Tomb Raider Underworld has some of the same flaws that are shared by other divisive games in the franchise, namely AoD and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
